I’m more than pleased to announce Caponata Studios first tutorial. It’s been a long time coming but I finally took the time to sit down and document my process on colorizing pictures. I’ve searched high and low all around the internet and found there wasn’t anything which answered my concerns about realism in colorization. I decided that the best way to colorize a photo was to do figure it out myself. This tutorial is the culmination of many hours of experimentation and practice.
In the PDF you’ll find a practical guide to image colorization using Photoshop. As well I’m providing my final PSD file so you can dissect the process further if you’d like. As well I’ll throw in the black and white image already cleaned up and an after .jpg to show the final result.

Life is about choices. We can choose how we act in every situation. It takes a choice to have a good day or a bad day. We can choose to act or sit on our buts and do nothing.
So what choices do we need to make to move ourselves from neutral to moving? Are we just gliding? Are we going to choose action over reaction?
It’s all about choice.
So I’ve been working on a color version of Metropolis as evidenced by an earlier post. Here’s my preliminary test on an actual frame from the movie. Keep in mind things, colors/highlights, may change slightly as I get deeper into the film. I just wish I could have access to the 2k res files for the colorization, working with small NTSC files is a P.I.T.A. to say the least.
Anyway here’s how it looks so far:

There are still some tweaks I’d like to do before I commit to doing an entire sequence but that’s where it’s at so far .
For years I’ve been discontent. Nothing has seemed to fit in life and there was an over abundance of stuff to change. One of my biggest sources of discontentment was the church. I didn’t like the way things were and all I saw was a machine, chewing and devouring. Being involved made me more and [...]
I’ve been on a black and white film kick lately. I was watching the classic 1926-27 film Metropolis this week and was wondering what it would look like in color. So I found a couple high resolution images and started coloring them in. Here’s one I’ve finished. It’s of the Maria Robot. I plan on [...]
Humility. Now if there isn’t a term more looked down upon in our society it’s that. To be humble means you have to be willing to be wrong, kind, thoughtful, and merciful. As our current world leaders show us, most seem to reject the notion of being humble. Our business leaders couldn’t possibly be wrong, [...]
Starting a Journey This last while has been a journey and a half. Late 2008 – Early 2009 I made the choice to start freelancing. Up until that point I’d run a high-end painting company, working in some of the richest neighbourhoods in our area. The economy started collapsing and my wife and I decided [...]
